About History: The founding of Yakult

Yakult Central Institute for Microbiological Research
Dr Minoru Shirota’s breakthrough came in 1930 when he succeeded in cultivating an especially strong strain of lactic acid bacteria that could survive the harsh gastric juice and bile to reach the intestines alive, where they were effective in promoting intestinal health. This bacterial strain was later named as L.casei strain Shirota in his honour. Dr Shirota then concocted a cultured milk drink using L.casei strain Shirota and called it ‘Yakult’.
