Yakult Central Institute was established to carry on our founder, Dr. Minoru Shirota’s passion and spirit based on his philosophies of preventive medicine and healthy intestines for longevity, termed as “Shirota-ism”.

Located at Kunitachi-shi, Tokyo, Japan, the Yakult Central Institute was initially launched as the “Shirota Institute for Research on Protective Bacteria” on April 1955. The institute equipped with cutting-edge facilities pursues research initiatives in the field of life science with the focus on microorganisms. It engages in research and development on food, cosmetic and pharmaceuticals that are continuously evolving through the use and application of microorganisms to bring about benefits for the betterment of people’s health.

Today, there are over 300 scientists and medical doctors who are actively pursuing research to this aim in the Yakult Central Institute.
